The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Medical Marijuana Program has created caps on the amount of medical marijuana that patients can purchase and possess. According to current regulations, patients in Missouri are allowed to buy up to four ounces (113 grams) of medical cannabis flower – or the equivalent ratio of other marijuana products – per 30-day period.

As far as possession, medical marijuana patients who don’t grow their own plants – or have plants cultivated by caregivers on their behalf – are limited to a 60-day supply of cannabis. Those patients who do cultivate or have plants cultivated on their behalf – can possess up to a 90-day supply.

A patient may be able to get approval for a larger supply if two independent physicians agree to a specific amount.

According to Missouri guidelines, 3.5 grams of unprocessed marijuana is the equivalent of 1 gram of concentrate or 100 milligrams of THC-infused product.

Under Missouri law, patients are limited to a maximum of 4 ounces per month of cannabis flower or the equivalent. Non-flower edibles are measured as MMEs (Missouri Marijuana Equivalency Units). One MME equals 3.5 ounces of marijuana or other THC-infused product such as edibles. Patients are allowed to buy up to 32 MMEs in a one month period.

Examples of MMEs

3.5 grams of marijuana = 1 MME
1 gram of concentrate = 1 MME
100 milligrams of a THC product = 1 MME

Example of a monthly purchase of MMEs

14 grams of marijuana = 4 MMEs
10 grams of concentrate = 10 MMEs
500 milligrams of a THC product = 5 MMEs
Total purchases for the month: 19 MMEs

Regarding possession, patients can possess a two-month supply of cannabis which equals 8 ounces of dried flower or 64 MMEs. Patients with cultivation licenses can possess a 3-month supply of cannabis which translates to 12 ounces of dried flower or 96 MME.

In Missouri, medical marijuana dispensaries are responsible for communicating purchase amounts through METRIC, the state’s tracking system. This system is designed to ensure that patients won’t exceed their purchase limits for any 30-day period.
