Connecticut Medical Marijuana Laws

Medical marijuana being prescribed to a patient

The Constitution State took a new kind of historic leap in 2011 with the decriminalization of marijuana. Possession of a half ounce of cannabis would now be considered a civil offense. No longer would having a small quantity of marijuana land you in jail. You could be fined up to $150 but without the threat of imprisonment. On the heels of decriminalization in Connecticut, momentum started building to legalize medical marijuana for the benefit of patients with serious health issues.

Medical Marijuana Law In Connecticut

The medical marijuana program in Connecticut, called “An Act Concerning the Palliative Use of Marijuana”, took effect in June 2012. The program was created to protect medical marijuana patients and caregivers from prosecution if they’re registered with the state.

In order to purchase medical marijuana in Connecticut, you need to register with the state’s medical marijuana program after being diagnosed by your physician with a qualifying medical condition. The application approval process usually takes around a month. You’ll receive an email with a temporary card to use while you wait for your permanent card. You’ll also choose your dispensary on your application. This will be where you go to shop every time you need medical marijuana.
